Lekgotla - The Origins of Humankind

          Human Origins and Anthropology

          Hosted by:
          Michael Rivera
          Emmanuel K. Ndiema

The beginning of human life is core to various disciplines such as anthropology as its focus is on the development of humans through time and space. In this Lekgotla, we bring together academics, practitioners and the public to engage in the topic bringing in their diverse perspectives. The paleontologists and other experts will lead the dialogue situating their arguments on evidential reasoning with a question, ‘Where do we come from and where are we headed to’ which will also explore human adaptation and impact on the environment. We specifically also invite voices from the general public about their understanding of the origins of humankind. The Lekgotla will include a bodily experience of the site that will cater for public interpretation of the evidence in relation to attributes such as spatial distribution, diet and diseases.

Keynote Address - Dr Michael Rivera - Towards decoloniality and a bioanthropology of care, justice and reconciliation

Dr. Michael Rivera is a Lecturer in Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Social Sciences. He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge in Biological Anthropology, and has since been involved in a number of projects that bridge the sciences and social sciences. These span bioarchaeology, critical race theory, environmental studies, the anthropology of food, the history of science, museum and heritage studies, military history, media and cultural studies, Hong Kong studies and Asian studies. He remains committed to moving towards decoloniality in bioanthropology, and practicing his science in ways that offer care to our students, orient towards social justice, and engage communities.

                  Talk title:
Towards decoloniality and a bioanthropology of care, justice and reconciliation

                  Talk abstract:
It seems apparent that biological anthropology and human evolutionary studies continues to change rapidly in response to recent world events and developing trends in academic knowledge production. These disciplines were heavily influenced by the European colonial ideologies of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Owing to their essentialist ideas, scientists of human diversity and development played a huge role in driving the colonial project.
Today, research in human biology and other related disciplines such as bioarchaeology, human evolutionary studies and ancient DNA studies still exhibit poor ethical scientific practice that should be improved. In the global sense, anthropological science is still largely controlled by wealthier, whiter institutions dominated by people of European descent and it is practiced in ways that align with ‘western’-derived epistemologies. Many of their scientific discoveries and contributions are significant, but anthropologists have also dehumanised and alienated groups worldwide and within their own institutions. Knowledge production is deeply political, and this is especially dangerous in a field that disseminates knowledge on human history and heritage.
Anthropologists and archaeologists, especially those with more institutional or epistemological power and privilege, must prepare to confront both history and current ethical problems. This will involve efforts to change how knowledge is produced and valued, ask questions that are relevant to diverse communities, and collate data ethically and with sensitivity to global history. By incorporating more insights from cultural, historical and social studies, and heeding the work of Global South scientists, we may move bioanthropology in more decolonial and ethical directions.
